GfK highlights South America’s sales growth

The importance of South America in the worldwide consumer durables market continues to grow, according to research house GfK. By the end of 2011, South America will account for 12% of global sales of consumer electronics, telecommunications and IT products. This represents continued growth from a figure of 9% in 2009 and 10% in 2010. HP ready to offload PC business

HP has made the momentous decision to evaluate ‘strategic alternatives’ for its personal systems group (PSG) including the possibility of selling the business or spinning it off into a separate company. Google makes Motorola move

Google is snapping up Motorola Mobility for US$12.5 billion cash – a 63% premium on the device vendor’s closing share price last Friday. IT services giant CSC has boosted its presence in Latin America, snapping up Sao Paulo-based Vixia in Brazil for an undisclosed sum. Silver Peak opens Mexico office

WAN optimisation solutions outfit Silver Peak Systems has continued the expansion of its Latin American operation, opening a new office in Mexico City. The new office will serve as a platform for sales, support, and marketing initiatives throughout Mexico. Cisco wields Flip axe

Networking giant Cisco has announced plans to ‘close down’ its consumer-focused Flip video camera business as part of a wider restructuring of its consumer business. Cisco is anticipating restructuring charges of US$300m and the loss of 550 jobs during the fiscal fourth quarter. Read full story
