The sixth annual MERA Awards ceremony takes place on 22nd May in Abu Dhabi in conjunction with DISTREE Middle East. Hundreds of ICT & CE vendor executives will vote live to determine Retailer of the Year across nine Middle East markets. Carrefour, Lulu, Emax, Sharaf DG and Virgin have all been nominated in multiple countries, based on vendor feedback collected over the last 12 months.

A total of 25 retailers have received official nominations for the ‘Middle East Retail Academy (MERA): 2013 Awards’ national awards, which take place at the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr in Abu Dhabi on May 22nd in conjunction with DISTREE Middle East 2013 – the region’s leading annual ICT and consumer electronics (CE) retail channel event.

Regional hypermarket Carrefour has received official nominations in seven countries, with fellow hypermarket chain Lulu making the top five in four national markets. Specialist retailers Emax, Sharaf DG and Virgin have each been nominated in three countries for a ‘MERA: 2013 Award’.

Farouk Hemraj, CEO and co-founder at DISTREE Events, said: “We are seeing the emergence of genuine regional retailers in the Middle East, but the role of in-country specialists should never be underestimated. The retail landscape is evolving fast and we congratulate all the retailers nominated for a national MERA Award.”

The Retailer of the Year nominations are based on continuous feedback collected from vendors during the last 12 months as part of MERA’s monthly report service. Receiving an official nomination marks out a retailer as a top five player in a specific country. The full list of retailer nominees for each country (listed in alphabetical order) is as follows.

Hemraj added: “The MERA Awards are designed to recognise sustained excellence in the regional retail channel. All nominated retailers should feel proud of their achievement and we look forward to celebrating with them at the Gala Dinner and awards ceremony on May 22nd.”
