First quarter growth in Chilean market

Research house GfK’s latest analysis of the ICT, telecoms and consumer electronics market in Chile has revealed that the total market value grew 3.3% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2012 to hit US$732.4m, driven by growth in multiple product segments including consumer electronics and IT, plus office kit and consumables.

GfK’s research measures the size of what it terms the ‘technical consumer goods’ market, which includes the following product categories: consumer electronics; photo; major domestic appliances; small domestic appliances; IT; telecoms, office equipment and consumables.

Chilean IT sales were up 6.8% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2012 to hit US$184.2m, with office equipment and consumables sales rising 6.9%. Consumer electronics sales jumped 5% in the same period to reach a market value of US$192m.

GfK’s data shows strong seasonality in the Chilean market. Regarding the overall market growth of 3.3% year-on-year, GfK stated: “This result is below the average growth rates seen in 2011. This occurred mainly because low sales over the holiday season in the first quarter of 2012 could not be rescued by the ‘back to school’ period.”

The GfK figures for 2011 showed a significant spike in the fourth quarter for the Chilean market. Sales in the fourth quarter were US$1.09 billion, a 45% sequential increase from the third quarter of 2011. Against this backdrop, first quarter 2012 sales – although up 3.3% year-on-year – were down 33% sequentially.
