Red Hat eyes emerging markets

by Stuart Wilson, Friday 13 June 2008

Linux vendor Red Hat is beefing up its presence in some of EMEA’s emerging markets, opening an office in South Africa and outlining plans to build up its presence in Dubai. Louis Seyfert, formerly at storage giant EMC, has been selected to head up the new office in South Africa, which will handle the whole of Southern Africa. The planned Dubai office will look after Red Hat’s activities in North Africa.

With emerging markets showing solid growth rates for Red Hat solutions, the vendor will look to build up strong channels to market for its product portfolio. Linux Warehouse had been operating as an exclusive distributor for Red Hat products in South Africa.

Both Red Hat and Linux Warehouse claim that the opening of the new office will create minimal channel conflict in terms of the existing relationship. Opennet MEA is currently the Red Hat Master distributor of Red Hat Linux products for the Middle East and North Africa regions.

Red Hat employs more than 2,000 people in 50-plus offices across the globe. The company already has points of presence in other major emerging markets such as Brazil, India and China.
