Aptec selects Exactus solution

by Stuart Wilson, Wednesday 11 June 2008

Middle East distribution giant Aptec will implement a new warehouse management system (WMS) from Exactus. The deal, which was announced by BSG - the regional partner and competency centre for Exactus - will see Aptec implement the Aware WMS to help manage its fulfillment and distribution operations. The solution will initially be installed at Aptec’s distribution centre in Jebel Ali Free Zone, UAE.

“Since we are operating in the Middle East, Aptec is enjoying solid year on year revenue growth, with daily transactions almost doubling yearly. The Exactus’ solution will help ensure the efficiency and accuracy we need to exceed service levels for our customers,” said Mario M. Veljovic, operations and commercial manager at Aptec.

“We were very impressed with the thorough, best practices-based implementation methodology BSG will utilise to complete this project within tight deadlines,” he added.

Aptec selected Exactus’ Aware WMS because of its flexibility in meeting changing business requirements and its proven track record in generating immediate, measurable improvements in space utilisation, throughput and accuracy whilst achieving the lowest possible total cost of ownership, according to the distrubutor.

Aptec will utilise Aware’s directed, optimised processes for all inbound and outbound activities, such as receiving, put-away, picking and shipping. In addition to the Core WMS, Aptec will implement Aware trading partner management (TPM) module, which is a secure web-based interface that extends the supply chain capabilities to trading partners by allowing them to share key business information.

By being able to better collaborate with customers, suppliers and trading partners, Aptec claims that it will be able to deliver customers the right products in a timely manner and with a high degree of efficiency and accuracy.

Aptec will also deploy Exactus’ Aware Mobile - an RF-based solutions on Psion Teklogix handheld terminals - to push current levels of accuracy for picking and truck loading even higher. With the high-volume operations Aptec manages, the company believes that reducing errors even a fraction of a percent will have a dramatic impact on the time spent processing returns from incorrect shipments.

“With the ability to leverage Aware’s rich functionality, system-directed processes, storage optimisation, task interleaving, RF-directed automated data capture and ease of configuration, we expect to realise real-time and accurate inventory, improved productivity, considerable cost savings by optimising picking and putaway functions and eliminating tedious data entry and manual transaction processing, fewer shipping errors, and overall improvement in customer service,” commented Biju Alex, IT manager at Aptec.

Aptec expects to realise a reduction in inventory carrying costs, improved data accuracy and reduction in picking errors from barcode scanning, as well as labour cost savings related to data entry, materials handling and management. All Exactus solutions are built on one platform and, therefore, will integrate seamlessly to help ensure the real-time exchange of critical information, according to the vendor.

Nasser Tufail, managing director at BSG, added: ’We are pleased Aptec has selected Exactus’ Aware to form the backbone of its fast-growing fulfillment and distribution operations.”

“Aptec will be empowered to realise operational excellence in their warehousing functions by providing responsive and flexible distribution networks, optimisation of inventory flow, high accuracy and visibility of inventory, complete and correct product information and superior levels of customer service,” he added.
