Xiaomi makes its move in Brazil

by Stuart Wilson, Thursday 2 July 2015

Fast-growing Chinese smartphone brand Xiaomi has announced that it will start selling its Redmi 2 device in Brazil later this month. The move marks Xiaomi’s first push outside Asian markets and its debut in Latin American markets. Xiaomi will use Foxconn’s Brazil-based assembly facilities to bypass the high import duties applied to finished technology products.

The Redmi 2 will be priced at just US$160 and will be available through retail channels in Brazil from July 7th. The Redmi 2 feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 64-bit processor, 4G dual SIM support, 4.7” HD display, 8MP camera and 2200 mAh Sony battery.

Hugo Barra, VP of global operations at Xiaomi, stated: “I strongly believe that Redmi 2 will be a game-changer in the Brazilian market, offering consumers a quality option never seen before in this price category. And this is only the start of our journey — as our business in Brazil grows, we will be bringing in a greater variety of exciting Mi products.”
