Tech Data to buy Technology Solutions business from Avnet

NASDAQ-quoted global distribution giant Tech Data will stump up US$2.6 billion to acquire the Technology Solutions business from rival distributor Avnet. Tech Data will shell out US$2.4 billion cash, plus 2.785 million Tech Data shares, to buy the business. Tech Data expects to achieve annual cost savings of approximately US$100m within two years after closing, primarily from efficiencies related to technology platforms, as well as streamlining duplicated functions and corporate expenses. JB Hi-Fi to acquire The Good Guys in Australia

Australian retailer JB Hi-Fi has confirmed a deal to acquire retail outfit The Good Guys for a cash sum of AU$870m (US$650m). The Good Guys is a leading home appliances and consumer electronics retailer in Australia with a network of 101 stores. The Good Guys sales hit AU$2.09 billion (US$1.56 billion) for the year ending June 30th 2016, with pre-tax profits coming in at AU$74.2m (US$55.4m). The deal is expected to close in late 2016 or early 2017. Read full story

New Challenger subsidiary set-up in Malaysia

Singapore-based retailer Challenger Technologies has set up a new wholly-owned susbidiary in Malaysisa. The new subsidiary, which is called Hachi MY, has been set up by Challenger Technologies’ wholly-owned Challenge Ventures unit. Announing the incorporation of the new subsidiary, Challenger stated that its principal business would be trading, retail, distribution and online trading if IT and lifestyle products and services. The agreement will allow Ingram Micro to distribute vPoint, DevTech’s multi-cloud orchestration solution which aims to simplify the way cloud infrastructures are created, managed, consumed and grown, via the Ingram Micro Cloud platform. Chinese gaming market hits US$21.1 billion in 2015

The gaming market remains a bright spot for the global technology market, with China encapsulating the huge potential for sales and margins the sector represents. The latest research from IDC claims that the number of gamers in China hit 530 million in 2015 with another 24 million expected to become gamers in 2016. China’s gaming market – defined by IDC as both software and consoles – was worth US$21.1 billion in 2015. Read full story
