Courts boosts sales in Malaysia

Asia Pacific (APAC) retailer Courts saw its sales in Malaysia climb 8.2% year-on-year for the quarter ending 30th June, while revenues in Singapore dropped 5.9%. Courts total sales for the quarter slipped 1.5% year-on-year to S$194.1m (US$155.24m), with after-tax profits down 27.9% at S$5.08m (US$4.06m) a profit margin of 2.62%. Read full story

Samsung snaps up SmartThings

Vendor giant Samsung has acquired SmartThings, a leading open platform for the smart home and the consumer Internet of Things (IoT). With Samsung’s resources and support, SmartThings hopes that it will be able to expand its platform and become available for even more partners and devices. Hardware vendor Acer has set up a new pan-Asia Pacific (APAC) region that will encompass the operations of China, Taiwan and APAC in one unit. Oliver Ahrens, formerly Acer EMEA president, will embark on a new challenge as president of this new regional operation. Misfit Wearables founder explains ‘turnaround test’

Sonny Vu, founder of Misfit Wearables, reckons authentication could be the area of functionality that transforms wearable technologies from optional accessories to essential devices that individuals never leave the house without. “I always like to apply the ‘turnaround test’ to wearable products,” explained Vu. “By that I mean would I turnaround and return home to get it if I was halfway to work and realised I had forgotten it?” Read full story
