Argentinean market exceeds US$8 billion in 2011

Research house GfK’s latest analysis of the ICT, telecoms and consumer electronics market in Argentina has revealed that the total market value grew 12.5% in full year 2011 to hit US$8.01 billion. Argentina - the location for the second annual DISTREE Latin America event later this year - witnessed strong growth across multiple product categories in 2011. Read full story

Positivo announces fourth quarter figures

South American PC and device manufacturer Positivo Informatica recorded sales of US$339.4m in the fourth quarter of 2011, up 4.6% year-on-year. Profits almost quadrupled to US$25.1m for Brazil’s leading local PC manufacturer. Positivo claims that 2011 was the company’s seventh consecutive year as Brazilian market leader. Read full story

HP to merge IPG and PSG units

Hardware giant HP is merging its PC and printer groups into one combined unit. HP’s imaging and printing group (IPG) and personal systems group (PSG) will join forces to become the HP printing and personal systems group (PSPG). The new super-unit will be headed up by PSG boss Todd Bradley. Vyomesh Joshi, boss of the IPG unit, is retiring after a 31-year career at HP. Read full story

Tech Data posts fourth quarter figures

Distribution giant Tech Data has announced that sales for its fourth quarter ending January 31st 2012 were flat year-on-year at US$7.11 billion with operating margin slipping to 1.18% from 1.65% a year earlier. Net profits for the quarter dropped 30% year-on-year to US$54.1m. Tech Data’s fourth quarter results did include a US$28.3m charge related to the disposal of its operations in Brazil and Colombia. DAY 3 – Whitman claims HP has got its swagger back

Most CEOs hit the stage on day one of a global partner summit to lay down the strategy and enable other executives to stay ‘on message’ for the rest of the conference. The 3,000-plus delegates at HP’s global partner summit in Las Vegas had to wait until day three to hear from Meg Whitman, president and CEO at the vendor giant. Whitman made the right pro-channel noises during her keynote this morning and the clarity of her message was applauded by partners. HP adds services to ease supplier sprawl

Vendor giant HP has introduced a range of new services designed to enable enterprises to integrate, manage and govern complex multivendor environments. HP reckons that the new services will result in reduced risk and costs for enterprises. The new HP service integration and management offering gives enterprises a single view into multisourced services, including cloud services, whether provisioned internally by IT or externally by non-IT business groups. DAY 1 - HP silent on smartphone strategy (for now)

Day one of the HP global partner conference in Las Vegas is drawing to a close and the vendor giant has been quick out of the blocks with a number of announcements relating to services, infrastructure and channel-led cloud offerings. On the PSG side, there were inevitable questions regarding HP’s future strategy in the tablet and smartphone product segments, but clear cut answers were thin on the ground. In one press session, Todd Bradley, executive VP of PSG, said: “Right now our focus looking ahead is on Windows 8 tablets. Frankly, we have some strategic work to do on the role we are playing in the smartphone space and we’re not prepared to talk about that.” Read full story

HP boosts cloud options for channel partners

Vendor giant HP wants its channel partners to help ease end-user businesses in their transition to the cloud. HP has launched a number of new improvements to its channel programmes and solutions at this week’s global partner conference in Las Vegas. The new HP Partnerone cloud specialisation and collaboration programmes, plus an expanded HP Serviceone offering, are designed to extend channel partners’ sales reach and accelerate end-user adoption of new technologies. Spierkel stands down as Ingram Micro CEO

Global distribution giant Ingram Micro has announced that Greg Spierkel has stood down as CEO of the company. Alain Monie has been named the new CEO of Ingram Micro effective as of today and will also retain his current title of company president. Spierkel will remain at the company until April 15th 2012 to assist with the management transition. Read full story
