PSafe raises funds for international expansion

Brazil-based antivirus solution vendor PSafe has raised US$30m to fund its planned international expansion across Latin America. Established in 2010, PSafe is focused on providing antivirus solutions for Android smartphones and devices. The US$30m fundraising was led by existing investors Qihoo 360, Pinnacle and Redpoint eVentures Brazil. Read full story

Amazon makes its move in Mexico

Global e-tail giant Amazon has made its move in Mexico, launching a physical goods store in-country at www.amazon.com.mx. The Spanish-website will offer millions of unique items across multiple categories big screen TVs, computers and laptops, headphones, smartphones, smartwatches, cameras, cables and accessories, plus games consoles and thousands of games titles. Dell claims top spot in Brazil PC market

Hardware vendor Dell took top spot in the Brazilian PC market in the first quarter of 2015, according to research company IDC. After 15 years of operating in Brazil, this was the first quarter where Dell had taken the overall market lead, having previously just topped the notebook standings. Dell accounted for 15.8% of all units sold in the first quarter with the vendor’s presence in retail channels playing a major role in its success. Read full story

Bellizia returns to Microsoft Brazil

Paula Bellizia has returned to Microsoft to become president of the technology giant’s Brazil operation. Bellizia previously spent ten years at Microsoft from 2002 to 2012. During the last few years she has held senior positions in Latin America with both Facebook and Apple. Bellizia takes over from Mariano de Beer who will take on a new multi-country role in Latin America driving the growth and development of Microsoft subsidiaries. Read full story

Xiaomi makes its move in Brazil

Fast-growing Chinese smartphone brand Xiaomi has announced that it will start selling its Redmi 2 device in Brazil later this month. The move marks Xiaomi’s first push outside Asian markets and its debut in Latin American markets. Xiaomi will use Foxconn’s Brazil-based assembly facilities to bypass the high import duties applied to finished technology products. Read full story

Latin America tablet users to exceed 92 million in 2015

The latest projection from research firm eMarketer predicts that the number of tablet users in Latin America will hit 92.3 million in 2015 – up 26% year-on-year. That represents 9.2% of global tablet users, according to the research firm. In Brazil alone, the number of tablet users is expected to reach 34.7 million in 2015. eMarketer defines a user as an individual that uses a tablet at least a month. Read full story

Ingram Micro buys Tech Data units in Peru and Chile

Distribution giant Ingram Micro has displayed its continued appetite for expansion in the fast-growing, high value Latin America channels. Ingram Micro has snapped up the operations of rival distributor Tech Data in Peru and Chile. The deal, which closed on March 16th, is forecast to add annual sales of US$270m to Ingram Micro’s business in the region. Read full story
