Comztek boosts Microsoft team

South African distributor Comztek has appointed Bryden Culbert as its Microsoft business development manager for the Cape region. In his new role, Culbert will be responsible for the management and promotion of Microsoft licensing within the region. Culbert was previously business development manager at a major Microsoft large account reseller (LAR). Read full story

Pan-European distributors at DISTREE XXL

DISTREE XXL 2011 has confirmed that it is on course for a record turnout of distributors from across the EMEA region. The event’s new Pan-European Distributor Programme (PDP) is attracting some of the channel’s biggest names to EMEA’s premier channel event. Ingram Micro is the latest distributor to confirm its participation, with a team of six senior executives led by European president Alain Maquet set to attend DISTREE XXL 2011 in Monaco from February 8-11th. Check Point names Southern Africa channel manager

Internet security solutions vendor Check Point has appointed Doros Hadjizenonos as channel manager for southern Africa. In his position, Hadjizenonos will drive the overall channel strategy and implementation for Check Point in the region. He will aim to help partners grow revenue while ensuring that customers receive high-quality service from local Check Point resellers and distributors. Read full story

Annex lands LG laptops

South Africa’s Annex Distribution has bolstered its vendor portfolio, striking a deal to push LG’s notebooks. Annex plans to push LG’s notebooks to its current reseller base in Southern Africa and will also look to open up new retail channels for the vendor. Read full story

Datatec offer for Comztek lapses

Datatec’s offer to buy Comztek has lapsed and the South African IT group has declared that it ‘will not pursue this matter further’. Datatec had initially tabled a bid in early September that valued Comztek at US$13.6m financed partly by cash and partly by the issue of shares. Datatec raised the value of its offer to US$14.6m on 12th October after completing due diligence. On 15th October, Mustek – a 41.84% shareholder in Comztek – announced that it had rejected the increased offer. Read full story

Rectron adds Acer rights

South African distributor Rectron has been appointed as an official Acer distributor. Rectron reckons that Acer is a major addition to its product portfolio, expanding its line-up as part of its post-recession strategy. Esquire also picked up an award from IC Intracom for its decade of service distributing the vendor’s Manhattan PC components and Intellinet network solutions security and surveillance kit. Platinum Micro makes South African debut

There’s a new name in the South African components distribution market, with the launch of Platinum Micro. The new outfit is the rebranded name for what was formerly known as Ingram Micro South Africa – the joint venture between MB Technologies and the global distribution giant. In July 2010, MB Technologies acquired Ingram Micro’s 50% stake in the business and became sole shareholder. Read full story
