IC Intracom plans distributor event

US-based brands Manhattan and Intellinet will stage an international distributor meeting in late September in Lüdenscheid, Germany. The vendor expects to gather 100-plus executives and business partners from more than 50 countries to attend the event. The two brands have a common parent company, IC Intracom, with Intellinet focused on networking kit and Manhattan offering a wide range of PC accessories and peripherals. Read full story

Tech Data appoints EMEA technology boss

Distribution giant Tech Data has appointed Philippe Bosquier as VP of IT for its EMEA operation. Bosquier has extensive experience in the supply chain and distribution sector and will assume full responsibility for Tech Data’s ERP, e-business, communications, IT operations and application development functions throughout the EMEA region. Extreme Networks and security solutions outfit Sourcefire have announced a partnership agreement. The two vendors will work together through Extreme’s purple partner programme to provide dynamic, automated, secure network infrastructure. The two companies reckon they can offer a winning combination of switching and intrusion detection, resulting in real-time security awareness and response to threats and vulnerabilities. Asbis boosts first half sales

Emerging markets distribution powerhouse Asbis has reported sales of US$270m for the second quarter of 2010 – up 16.6% year-on-year. This boosted first half sales by 28% year-on-year at US$600m with gross margin of US$27.3m, but the company made a net loss of US$1.9m for the first six months. This was however a significant improvement on the US$1.9m loss made a year earlier. Read full story

Mobile device sales climb in second quarter

The latest numbers from Gartner claim that worldwide mobile device sales climbed 13.8% year-on-year to hit 325.6 million in the second quarter of 2010. This figure included smartphone sales of close to 62 million units – up more than 50% year-on-year. Android became the world’s third most popular operating system and took top spot in the US market. Avnet posts fourth quarter figures

Distribution giant Avnet has posted fourth quarter sales up 38.5% year-on-year at US$5.21 billion. After-tax profits almost tripled to US$141.1m for the quarter ending July 3rd 2010. The EMEA region was a star performer for Avnet as the company took advantage of improving demand dynamics in the technology market. Read full story

Hurd resigns as HP boss

Mark Hurd has resigned as chairman, CEO and president at global IT giant HP effective immediately. Hurd’s departure comes in the wake of a sexual harassment investigation involving HP marketing contractor and racy movie star Jodie Fisher. The investigation found that Hurd had not violated HP’s sexual harassment policy, but did find violations of HP’s standards of business conduct. Read full story
