ATS bags Big Blue cloud status
VAD outfit Avnet Technology Solutions (ATS) has picked up IBM cloud builder certification status. ATS reckons that this further illustrates its commitment to the cloud computing market. This latest certification strengthens Avnet’s cloud proposition, cloudready, and showcases its ability to provide cloud solutions incorporating IBM software and hardware across Europe.

Research house GfK believes that media tablets will continue to have a profound influence on the Western European IT market in 2012. GfK’s retail sales data showed that the UK was the biggest national market in Western Europe for media tablets in the 11 months from January to November 2011, followed by Germany and France in second and third respectively.

Acer tops ultrabook distribution sales
PC vendor Acer is leading the way in terms of sales of ultrabooks through Western Europe’s distribution channel according to channel research specialists Context. Acer picked up an impressive 62% market share in terms of ultrabooks sold through the Western European distribution channel in the fourth quarter of 2011. Toshiba took second spot with Asus and Lenovo in third and fourth respectively.

Tablet boost for December PC sales
Preliminary figures from channel tracking specialist Context indicate that European PC sales for the three weeks before Christmas 2011 were up 6% year-on-year. Context claims that a large boost in sales of tablet PCs contributed to the volume increase. Representatives from Context are presenting during the conference programme at next month’s DISTREE EMEA channel event in Monaco.

Wick Hill picks up Imation rights in UK
VAD outfit Wick Hill has been appointed as a UK distributor for Imation’s mobile security products. The agreement will see Wick Hill focus on the distribution of Imation’s MXI, IronKey and Defender solutions. Wick Hill reckons that the deal will give channel partners access to high performance products at competitive prices.

VAD outfit Avnet Technology Solutions (ATS) will hold an HP networking academy session in Iraq later this month. The event, which forms part of ATS’ value-add training programme is designed to enrich the skill set of channel partners and update them on the latest technology and solutions development. The two-day channel training session will take place in Erbil on the 20-21st December.

Specialist audio visual distributor TDMaverick, which is part of Tech Data, has appointed Julian Klein as European development director. Klein joins the team as TDMaverick expands into nine countries and will be tasked with replicating the distributor’s success in the UK throughout the continent. Klein will be responsible for developing countries and vendor partnerships as Maverick continues to expand throughout Europe.

Research firm Context reckons that appetite for tablet PCs is starting to climb, with an increasing number of buyers looking beyond Apple products and considering other brands. The research, conducted in partnership with CCS Insight, showed tablet products such as the Asus Eee Transformer and Acer Iconia Tab starting to make an impression in the overall market landscape.
