Connected appliance shipments to soar

The numbercrunchers at Juniper Research reckon that connected home appliance shipments will hit 202 million per annum globally by 2021, rising from just 17 million in 2016. Juniper claims that with the additional cost of including basic connectivity now less than US$10, hardware manufacturers will increasingly introduce the functionality into many mass market as well as high-end items including fridges, ovens and washing machines. Periscope sees decreased interest in Black Friday

Periscope by McKinsey has today released the findings of new research conducted with US and UK consumers on their attitudes towards Black Friday 2016, and how they plan to shop. Black Friday may be considered one of the biggest shopping events of the year, but the survey showed limited involvement and decreased interest amongst consumers. Looking at where consumers will spend their money during Black Friday 2016, consumer electronics continues to be king, with 55% of US and 49% of UK shoppers saying this will be a key category in which they are looking to make purchases. VR hardware market to hit US$50 billion per annum by 2021

Research house Juniper reckons that the global value of the virtual reality (VR) hardware market will hit US$50 billion per annum by 2021, up tenfold from the projected figure of US$5 billion for 2016. The research includes hardware revenues from VR headsets, peripherals and 360-degree cameras. This rapid growth will be driven by widespread adoption of VR by smartphone users, and the high unit prices commanded by headsets for PCs and consoles, according to Juniper. Console VR is expected to account for over 50% of VR hardware revenues, but only make up 27% of shipments. Read full story

Windows 10 Pro adoption on the rise

Unit sales of PCs equipped with Windows 10 Pro through Western European distribution jumped 14% in August 2016 compared to July, and now account for one quarter of all Windows business PCs sold, according to latest data published by CONTEXT, the European IT market research company. Read full story

SSD adoption in PCs climbs in Western Europe

The adoption rate of solid-state drives (SSDs) in notebooks and desktops is steadily rising, according to latest data published by CONTEXT, the European IT market research company. In total, 27% of notebook volumes sold through Western Europe’s largest distributors in the second quarter of 2016 featured SSDs, compared to 19% in the same quarter a year ago. SSD share in desktop volume sales rose to 16% in the second quarter of 2016 from 6% a year earlier. Read full story

Darty boosts margins with Mirakl marketplace

Marketplace platform provider Mirakl reckons that Darty, a leading European electronics retailer, is seeing better visibility in search, greater profit margins, and new category growth after implementing the Mirakl marketplace solution in 2014. According to a new case study published by Forrester Research, Darty attributes its marketplace success to buy in from C-level support and the foresight to start with non-overlapping product categories, dedicate adequate employee resources, and take advantage Mirakl’s marketplace platform versus custom building their own solution. Western European reseller channel eyes security opportunity

The Western European IT channel is gearing up to ride a wave of new demand for security products as customers rush to adopt mobile and cloud services to support their businesses, according to the latest ChannelWatch survey from CONTEXT. Over 2,000 IT resellers in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal were surveyed at the beginning of 2016 for the report. In terms of growth prospects for the year, security was the number one rated category. Read full story

Chinese gaming market hits US$21.1 billion in 2015

The gaming market remains a bright spot for the global technology market, with China encapsulating the huge potential for sales and margins the sector represents. The latest research from IDC claims that the number of gamers in China hit 530 million in 2015 with another 24 million expected to become gamers in 2016. China’s gaming market – defined by IDC as both software and consoles – was worth US$21.1 billion in 2015. Read full story

Russian market rebound possible in 2017

The latest research by PMR has laid bare the IT market downturn that occurred in Russia. The IT market in Russia slumped by almost a third in Euro terms in 2015 to fall below €10 billion (US$11.09 billion). Short term forecasts assume the market will continue to drop in 2016, while a bounce-back is possible in 2017, according to PMR. Read full story
