DISTREE EMEA teams with CONTEXT for ChannelWatch 2013

DISTREE EMEA has announced a new partnership with international IT research company CONTEXT. The agreement will see CONTEXT and DISTREE EMEA collaborate to produce new in-depth research on channel conditions across the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region. IDC offers third quarter MEA PC market insight

The numbercrunchers at IDC reckon that third quarter 2012 PC shipments into the Middle East and Africa (MEA) market were down 1.9% year-on-year at 4.9 million units. Increased cannibalisation of the PC market by tablet demand coupled with consumers opting to wait for the launch of Windows 8 were both cited as reasons for the slowdown. Read full story

Gartner gives Lenovo global top spot

Research house Gartner’s third quarter PC global rankings gave Lenovo the top spot for the first time. HP’s not ready to give up its crown yet and prefers IDC’s take on the market. HP issued the following brief statement: “While there are a variety of PC share reports in the market, some don’t measure the market in its entirety. The IDC analysis includes the very important workstation segment and therefore is more comprehensive. In that IDC report, HP occupies the number one position in PCs.” Read full story

EMEA PC market ‘constrained’ in third quarter

The numbercrunchers at IDC reckoned that the EMEA PC market ‘remained constrained’ in the third quarter of 2012. There were low levels of sell-in during July and August as vendors looked to ensure leaner inventory levels after a strong second quarter. IDC claimed that September sell-in was stronger, boosted by the production of new Windows 8 systems, plus ultrabook and slimline PC models set to hit the shelves at the end of October. European desktop PC sales slide

Research house Context reckons that European desktop PC sales through distribution continued to slide in July and August 2012. Context reckons that desktop PC sales to businesses through distribution were down 10.3% year-on-year for the two month period as more and more customers opted for portable devices instead. Middle East retail channel confidence hits record high

Confidence levels have hit a record high in the Middle ICT and consumer electronics (CE) channel, according to the latest Monthly Monitor Report (MMR), published by the Middle East Retail Academy (MERA). More than 50 retailers, distributors and vendors submitted feedback with overall business confidence levels for the three months ending November 2012 climbing to 7.11 (scored out of 10) – an all-time high since the report launched in June 2009. The impact of GITEX period promotions, the launch of Windows 8, new smartphone releases and an expected fourth quarter sales upswing were all cited as reasons for increased channel confidence. Monthly European PC tracker unveiled

Research houses IDC and Context have teamed up to launch a monthly PC and tablet tracker service in Europe. The new tracker will produce monthly updates on manufacturer shipments into Germany, France and the UK. The two companies claim that the new service will combine IDC’s supply side insight with Context’s channel sales data, offering and accurate and frequent view of market conditions. Read full story

Building channels in Argentina and Brazil

DISTREE Latin America 2012 today offered vendors a unique opportunity to get up to speed on channel dynamics in Argentina and Brazil. Chanel Academy workshop sessions offered delegates access to the latest market data and a deeper understanding of important issues such as local tax systems and import regulations. Global PC sales flat in second quarter

Preliminary data from research house Gartner claims that second quarter 2012 global PC sales were down 0.1% in unit terms year-on-year at 87.5 million units. It is important to note that Gartner’s data includes desktops, notebooks and netbooks, but not tablets. Read full story
