GfK reports Russian market growth

Research house GfK’s latest analysis of the ICT, telecoms and consumer electronics market in Russia claims that the total market value rose 2.4% year-on-year in calendar 2013 to hit RUB1.4 trillion (US$38.1 billion). The increase was driven by a strong telecoms sector that climbed 12.2% year-on-year to hit a value of RUB272 billion (US$7.52 billion), driven by increased smartphone sales. Read full story

East Africa PC shipments rise

The numbercrunchers at IDC reckon that PC shipments to East Africa were up 3% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2013, hitting a total of 140,251 units. Strong gains in the markets of Uganda, Tanzania, and Ethiopia helped offset soft demand in Kenya, where the introduction of new VAT legislation resulted in a slide in PC shipments. Read full story

DISTREE EMEA 2014 drives channel business

DISTREE EMEA facilitated more than 6000 pre-scheduled one-on-one meetings at this week’s four-day channel event. Thousands more meetings were scheduled at the event, with more than 1000 delegates making full use of the on-site DISTREE Matching Squad to facilitate extra one-on-ones. ASP declines impact European CE and IT market

Technically feasible or commercially viable?

During an International CES pre-event press briefing on Sunday 5th January, Shawn Dubravac, chief economist for the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), predicted that more than 20000 new products would be launched this week at CES 2014 in Las Vegas. Don’t expect them all to hit retail shelves in 2014 though. Dubravac was keen to stress the need to distinguish carefully between two sets of products: the ones that are technically feasible and ones that are commercially viable. Read full story
