ZigBee 3.0 unifies wireless standards

The ZigBee Alliance, a non-profit association of organisations creating open, global standards that define the Internet of Things (IoT) for use in consumer, commercial and industrial applications, has announced the unification of its market-leading wireless standards to a single standard named ZigBee 3.0. This standard will provide interoperability among the widest range of smart devices and give consumers and businesses access to innovative products and services that will work together seamlessly to enhance everyday life, according to Zigbee. UK consumers show appetite for smart homes

The latest research from GfK shows that a ‘connected’ home appeals to 76% of UK consumers. The idea of controlling heating, security, entertainment systems and even household appliances in a smart home environment is clearly a popular concept with UK consumers. Unfortunately, the GfK research also noted that only 35% would be willing to pay for the cost of connecting their home. Read full story

Smart bulbs market set to soar

The market for residential smart bulbs is set to soar in the next few years, according to projections from ABI Research. The embryonic market for connected LED or ‘smart’ light bulbs saw less than 2.5 million units shipped in 2013. ABI reckons that falling LED prices and the endorsement of ZigBee Light Link as the preferred connectivity solution by a number of leading lighting manufacturers means that annual smart bulb shipments are set to increase to 223 million by 2020, achieving a total installed base of over 400 million. Strong market growth in Vietnam

Research house GfK’s latest analysis of the ICT, telecoms and consumer electronics market in Vietnam indicates that the total market value grew 26% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2014 to hit US$1.25 billion. The strong growth was driven by sales increases in six of the seven segments that GfK tracks. Telecoms sales were up 33.7% year-on-year at US$542m. Read full story

Indian tablet sales climb in second quarter

Research house IDC reckons that tablet shipments in India hit 860,000 in the second quarter of 2014, up 9% compared to the first quarter of the year. IDC claims that the latest results indicate ‘early signs of recovery’ for the product category after a tough six months. Read full story

Major brands form IoT consortium

Major technology brands have joined forces to establish the Open Interconnect Consortium (OIC), dedicated to ensuring interoperability between the billions of devices that will make up the Internet of Things (IoT) in the years ahead.
