GfK sheds light on Brazilian growth
Research house GfK has shed some light on the sparkling IT sales growth rates that are driving vendors to develop new routes-to-market in Brazil. For the first five months of 2011 – from January to May inclusive – PC unit sales were up 18% year-on-year with mobile PC sales jumping 27.5%, according to GfK. Digital camera sales soared 17% and TVs (including plasma and LCD models) rocketed 49%.

Weak demand hits EMEA PC sales
EMEA PC shipments were down 8.9% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2011 according to research house IDC. High inventory levels depressed PC sell-in with total unit shipments hitting 22.1 million. IDC also reckoned that users switching to tablets and away from PCs contributed to weak consumer demand and slow stock depletion in Western Europe.

Second quarter PC sales slip in EMEA
EMEA PC shipments slipped 4.8% year-on-year to 23.1 million units in the second quarter of 2011. HP led the EMEA rankings with unit sales up 3.6% at 4.93 million units, pushing the vendor’s market share up to 21.4%. Acer’s unit sales slumped 34.9% to 3.26 million units.

Notebook sales rise in Romania
Notebook sales in Romania during the first quarter of 2011 climbed 11.1% year-on-year to hit 103,302 units according to research house IDC. In terms of vendor performance, the Romanian market remains dynamic, with Acer, Asus and Lenovo seeing a year-on-year sales decline, while HP, Toshiba and Dell all recorded solid growth.

Smartphone sales soar in Latin America
A new smartphone will be sold every second in Latin America this year, according to the latest data from IDC. The research house reckons that total smartphone sales will hit 34 million units in calendar 2011 – an impressive 65 devices a minute. First quarter smartphone sales in Latin America were up 66% year-on-year at 6 million units, according to IDC.

The Peruvian PC market is expected to record double-digit percentage growth in terms of unit sales in 2011, according to IDC. The Peruvian PC market grew 14.4% year-on-year in 2010 and the research house is predicting a 12% growth in 2011 as the total addressable market continues to expand.

UPS adds extra capacity in Latin America
Latin America’s strong economic growth rates has driven UPS to increase its cargo capacity by more than 50% on 19 weekly flights in Central and South America. The logistics giant has replaced a Boeing 757 narrow-body aircraft with a new, larger B-767 wide-body freighter to boost capacity.

E-commerce accelerates in Latin America
E-commerce growth rates in Latin America will be the fastest in the world through to 2015, according to a recent article by Daniel Latev, head of non-store retailing research at Euromonitor International. Interest in the potential of the Latin America e-commerce market is growing fast. Japanese internet services company Rakuten recently snapped up a 75% stake in Ikeda, a leading provider of e-commerce services to many of Brazil’s largest retailers.

Research house IDC is predicting that the Latin American PC market will continue to show strong growth throughout 2011. The regional market is set to record double digit year-on-year percentage growth in 2011, with total unit sales hitting 36.3 million.
