Acer hits highest profit in 27 quarters

Tech vendor Acer has announced that its after-tax profits for the third quarter of 2017 hit their highest level in 27 quarters. Acer posted sales of NT$60.58 billion (US$2.01 billion) for the quarter – up 13% sequentially and 3.4% year-on-year. After tax profits hit NT$1.45 billion (US$48.2m) – up more than fivefold year-on-year. Acer claimed that the results demonstrated the company’s strong business momentum, stabilising operations and renewed profitability. Read full story

Periscope upbeat on Black Friday potential in UK

It could be a huge Black Friday for 2017, as 44% of US, and 81% of UK shoppers plan to go bargain hunting online and in stores, according to research from Periscope By McKinsey. Almost half of US consumers confirmed they will be shopping this Black Friday – compared to just 26% in 2016 and 23% who were undecided. The jump is much higher in the UK with an impressive 81% of stating they intend to shop this Black Friday – compared to just 22% who anticipated getting involved last year and 30% who were on the fence. Smart home market worth US$6 billion in 2017

Smart home devices are going mainstream, according to the analysts at Futuresource Consulting. Its latest report reveals that the devices will achieve a retail value of US$6 billion worldwide this year, with revenues expected to triple by 2021. "The smart home has arrived and its impact is indisputable," said Filipe Oliveira, a market analyst at Futuresource Consulting. Read full story

European PC gaming market climbs 23% in second quarter

Europe’s PC gaming market sales grew 23% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2017, as enthusiasts sought out high performance and premium branded systems, according to market analyst CONTEXT. Vietnam consumer tech growth continues

Research house GfK’s latest analysis of the ICT, telecoms and consumer electronics market in Vietnam indicates that the total market value grew 13.2% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2017 to hit US$2.12 billion. The strong growth was driven by sales increases in six of the seven segments that GfK tracks. Telecoms sales were up 18.3% year-on-year at US$1.07 billion. Read full story

Lifestyle Tech, Smart Home and Gaming identified as top growth categories by APAC consumer tech channel

DISTREE Asia Pacific (APAC) has released additional findings from its 2017 APAC Consumer Tech Channel Survey. Lifestyle Tech, Smart Home and Gaming were identified as the top three categories with the most growth potential in APAC, according to this year’s survey. Gaming monitor sales rocket

The fast-growing billion-dollar global e-sports economy drove worldwide gaming monitor sales up 175% year-on-year for the second quarter of 2017, according to the latest figures from CONTEXT, the global IT market analysis company. The rapid growth of gaming monitors was not quite enough to offset an overall 3% year-on-year decline in worldwide monitor shipments, driven by lower sales in China. Read full story
