Summer slowdown hits Middle East retail channel
The Middle East Retail Academy (MERA) Monthly Monitor Report (MMR) for July 2010 has laid bare the impact of the summer slowdown on trade levels. The MMR canvasses the opinion of IT and consumer electronics retailers and vendors across the Middle East. For July 2010, the MMR Sales Index fell to 5.21 – its second lowest level since the launch of the MMR in June 2009. The retailer Confidence Index plunged to a new record low of 4.46.

Emerging markets distribution powerhouse Asbis has reported sales of US$270m for the second quarter of 2010 – up 16.6% year-on-year. This boosted first half sales by 28% year-on-year at US$600m with gross margin of US$27.3m, but the company made a net loss of US$1.9m for the first six months. This was however a significant improvement on the US$1.9m loss made a year earlier.

Distribution recovery continues
The Global Technology Distribution Council (GTDC) reckons that the IT industry recovery is continuing to gain strength, driven by stronger US sales and stabilising conditions in Europe. GTDC claims that second quarter sales in Europe were up 15% year-on-year.

EMEA PC market recovery continues
Research house IDC’s latest EMEA data points to a continued recovery in the region’s PC market. IDC reckons that second quarter sales were up 21.1% year-on-year with almost 24 million PCs shipped. According to IDC, the market exceeded expectations in both the commercial and consumer segments.

EMEA second quarter PC sales climb
EMEA second quarter PC sales were up 21.6% year-on-year at 24.1 million units according to research house Gartner. Acer led the way with PC shipments of 5.14m during the quarter – up 37.1% year-on-year. The EMEA market continued to be driven by strong consumer demand for mobile PCs.

Emerging markets distribution powerhouse Asbis has published its annual report for 2009. In a frank letter to shareholders, Siarhei Kostevitch, Asbis chairman and CEO, admitted: “Last year was the most challenging and certainly the most difficult year of my business life. The world’s financial crisis had affected all sectors of the economy and IT distribution could not be an exemption. The consequences of this crisis were multiple and in all countries of the group’s operations.”
