DSG flogs Polish stores for €1

Retail giant DSG has flogged off its eight Electro World stores in Poland to IDMSA Brokerage House for the princely sum of €1. The deal includes the immediate transfer of all eight stores, operations and employees. IDMSA is working with Mix Electronics, one of Poland’s major electrical retailers. The move forms part of London-quoted DSG’s ongoing efforts to improve its financial performance. Read full story

Middle East retail confidence climbs

ICT and CE retailers operating in the Middle East are showing an increased confidence in their business prospects for the next three months. The newfound optimism was detailed in the latest Monthly Monitor report from the Middle East Retail Academy (MERA). The overall confidence index for both retailers and vendors (scored out of 10) climbed to 6.25, up from just 5.54 a month earlier. Read full story

LG expands netbook range in Jordan and Iraq

LG has launched its latest X120 and X130 netbooks in Jordan and Iraq. In Jordan, the IT and consumer electronics vendor is working with retail partners Smart Buy, Carrefour and PC Jordan to make the new netbook models available. LG works with IT shops in all major cities in Iraq as its primary in-country retail route-to-market. Read full story

Axiom targets training boost

Middle East mobile phone retailer Axiom Telecom has launched a staff development programme. The company hopes that the new programme will further improve and enhance customers’ in-store experience. Axiom has also indicated that it plans to increase the number of its retail outlets in UAE, Saudi Arabia, and India throughout 2009. Read full story

New image for Eros

UAE-based distributor and retailer Eros Group has whipped the covers off a new corporate image. The company has also announced plans to revamp all 27 of its Eros Digital Home stores. Eros Group distributes products from a number of major vendors including Samsung, Hitachi and Tarsus. Read full story

CGC business partners enjoy reward trip

Consolidated Gulf Company (CGC), a Nokia partner in Qatar, rewarded 20 executives from its channel partners with a week-long trip to the Philippines. The group’s reward trip followed CGC’s recent partner excellence awards ceremony. Office Depot store opens in Kuwait

A flagship Office Depot store has opened in The Avenues Mall in Kuwait. Office Depot signed a franchise agreement with international retailer M.H. Alshaya covering Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and Oman. The new 900 square metre store will offer thousands of products and services to businesses and individuals. Read full story

Retailers enticed by Dubai metro link

The opportunity to locate retail outlets in an air conditioned link joining Dubai’s Mall of the Emirates to its new metro station has proven irresistible to a number of IT and consumer electronics retailers. Both Emax and E-City have decided to open their first Mall of the Emirates stores within the link, while Jacky’s has decided to relocate to the new area. Nokia will also open the world’s first Nokia Evo store in the metro link shopping area. Read full story

Al-Futtaim adds Best Buy executive at board level

UAE business group Al-Futtaim has named Bob Willett as a non-executive board director. Willett’s current role is CEO of Best Buy International, the US-based multinational retailer of technology and consumer electronics products. Al-Futtaim’s business includes UAE technology and consumer electronics retailer Plug-Ins. Read full story
