Plug-Ins plans Windows 7 promotion

UAE retailer Plug-Ins is planning a range of promotions around the global launch of Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system. Plug-Ins, which is part of the Al-Futtaim group, will launch its promotion – called ‘Power of 10’ – during GITEX Computer Shopper (GCS) later this month. GCS is a special retail event organised in Dubai alongside IT and consumer electronics trade show GITEX. Read full story

Kobian eyes MEA expansion

UAE-based PC, components and peripherals vendor Kobian Group has unveiled plans for further expansion in the Middle East and Africa region. Kobian Group, which produces PCs and notebooks and components under the Mercury brand, forecasts sales of US$350m in 2010 – up from US$115m in 2006. Read full story

Best Buy reports second quarter figures

Retail behemoth Best Buy has reported global sales for the second quarter ending August 2009 of US$11.02 billion – up 12% year-on-year – with profits hitting US$158m. International sales were up 65% to US$2.7 billion thanks to the inclusion of revenue from Best Buy Europe. Read full story

Middle East CE & ICT retail confidence dips

The Middle East Retail Academy (MERA) Monthly Monitor Report for working month August showed a slight confidence dip regarding business prospects for the next three months. The report, which gathers together the opinions of the region’s leading CE & ICT vendors and retailers, showed the overall confidence index declining to 5.85 (scored out of 10) compared to 6.25 a month earlier. StartMaster lands LG and Samsung contracts

Russian retailer StartMaster has signed direct contracts with Samsung and LG. StartMaster, which operates as a retailer and an e-tailer, claims that the new direct contract relationship will allow it to simplify the business planning process with the vendors and offer more competitive prices to customers. Komplett strengthens management team

E-tailer Komplett ASA has appointed Peter Keerberg as the new manager for its operations in Sweden and Denmark. Keerberg, 48, will take charge of Komplett Data Sverige AB, which is owned by Komplett ASA. The Komplett group operates 11 webshops spanning six European countries: Norway, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium and Ireland. Keerberg will join Komplett’s executive team and report to CEO Ole Vinje. Read full story
