Emax cleared for takeoff with Skywards deal

Middle East IT and consumer electronics retailer Emax is hoping that its sales will soar sky high after signing a partnership deal with Emirates airline. Under the terms of the agreement customers will receive one Skywards mile for every US$2 spent in Emax stores (excluding branches in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait). Skywards is the frequent flyer programme operated by Emirates. Read full story

Middle East retail channel split on 2010 outlook

The Middle East Retail Academy (MERA) Monthly Monitor Report (MMR) for December 2009 showed a slight improvement in channel conditions. The overall MERA Confidence Index climbed modestly to 6.21 (scored out of 10). There is a disparity growing between vendors and retailers. While the Confidence Index for vendors climbed to 6.8 from 6.15 a month earlier, the Confidence Index for retailers slipped to 5.54 – down from 6.1. Read full story

DSG offers upbeat trading update

London-quoted retail giant DSG International has issued a trading update on the importance three month festive period ending January 9th 2010. Group sales were up 11% with DSG claiming a good performance across all categories and in all markets, particularly in its Italian, Nordics, UK electricals and e-commerce business units. During the Christmas period in the UK, DSG claims to have sold a PC and a TV every two seconds. Read full story

Fourth quarter PC shipments climb in EMEA

Fourth quarter PC shipments climbed 3.6% year-on-year in EMEA to hit 29.66 million units. HP topped the vendor rankings in EMEA, shifting 6.01 million units, accounting for 21.6% of the total market. Fast-growing Acer is snapping at HP’s heels in second place with unit sales of 5.89 million for the quarter – an increase of 37.1% year-on-year. Read full story

Spain’s Best Buy eyes more markets

Spain-based consumer electronics and computer products vendor Best Buy (not to be confused with the US retail giant) will attend DISTREE XXL to promote its portfolio to distributors from across the EMEA region. Best Buy offers a portfolio of IT and consumer electronic products aimed at the home market including webcams, PC to TV cards, speakers and MP3 players. Read full story

Retail confidence dips in Middle East as 2009 ends

Retail confidence in the Middle East IT and consumer electronics channel dipped sharply towards the end of calendar 2009. The Middle East Retail Academy (MERA) Monthly Monitor Report (MMR) for working month November 2009 showed the overall retail confidence index falling to 6.13. Drilling deeper into the results, the decline was triggered by a sharp decline in vendor scores, indicating a more pessimistic outlook on the market prospects for the first quarter of 2010. Wilk eyes Western Europe

Polish company Wilk Elektronik is poised to continue its international channel expansion in 2010. Wilk, which specialises in the production and distribution of memory products, sells products under the Goodram and Gooddrive brands. The company will attend DISTREE XXL 2010 in Monaco in February with an eye on potential new distribution deals that will allow Wilk to crack the major markets of Western Europe. Read full story
