Dixons adds new non-executive director

Dixons Retail has announced the appointment of Andrea Gisle Joosen as a non-executive director effective from March 1st 2013. Joosen has extensive international business experience in a variety of sectors including consumer electronics, having spent part of her career as managing director for Panasonic Nordic. Emax expects DSF sales boost

Middle East retailer Emax, part of the Landmark Group, is expecting a significant sales boost during this year’s Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF), which runs from January 3rd until February 3rd. Emax has boosted its advertising and promotional spend during DSF by 22% year-on-year, splashing out more than US$2.2m for this year’s event. Read full story

Plug-Ins unveils DSF promotions

UAE IT and consumer electronics (CE) retailer Plug-Ins has lined up a range of offers and promotions for this month’s Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF). Consumers will have the chance to win 3D LED TVs, shopping vouchers and can also take advantage of bundled offers during the month-long shopping event, which ends on February 3rd. Jacky’s positive about DSF potential

UAE ICT and consumer electronics (CE) retailer Jacky’s Electronics is upbeat on the sales potential during this month’s Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF). Jacky’s reckons that an influx of tourists from other GCC states, Russia and India will create the conditions required for sales growth. Darty to seek approval for Italian disposal

European ICT and consumer electronics (CE) retailer Darty will seek shareholder approval to proceed with the disposal of its Italian operations at a meeting scheduled for January 17th 2013. Darty is proposing to hand over its 20 Italian stores, staff and €3m (US$3.9m) cash to electronics retailer DPS. In return Darty would receive a 15% stake in DPS. Darty’s Italian operation has posted more than €100m (US$132m) in cumulative operating losses since 2005. Read full story

Metra appointed Apple authorised distributor

Apple has boosted its Middle East distribution channel, appointing Metra as an authorised distributor partner. Channel sources indicate that the deal has been in place for a few weeks. Metra is now displaying the Apple authorised distributor logo on its website. Dubai-based Arab Business Machines (ABM), part of the multinational Midis Group, is also an Apple authorised distributor in the Middle East. Read full story

RIM teams with Asbis for Russian retail push

Research in Motion (RIM), the maker of Blackberry mobile devices, is hoping that a partnership with emerging markets distributor Asbis can help it crack the fast-growing Russian retail channel. RIM and Asbis hope to open up new consumer-focused routes-to-market in Russia and introduce new Blackberry smartphones into the retail channel. Read full story
