UK shoppers snap up cheap tablets
IT research company CONTEXT reckons that low cost tablets under £200 (US$310) were a hit with festive shoppers in the UK in late 2012. Away from premium Apple products, CONTEXT found strong demand for lower priced Nexus 7 and Galaxy Tab 2 7” tablets. Consumers also snapped up Blackberry’s Playbook tablet, which was sold at low price to clear stocks. CONTEXT data revealed that more than 800,000 tablets were sold through the UK distribution channel during November and December 2012.

Wexler plans European channel expansion
Tablets and e-readers from Wexler could become a common sight in European markets in 2013. Wexler is attending next month’s DISTREE EMEA in Monaco to meet major distributors and retailers from across the region as the company looks to extend its channel reach. Leo Prozument, CEO at Wexler, said: “We want to succeed in taking the first step of introducing a top brand for e-readers - and soon tablets as well - to the top retailers in consumer electronics and IT markets in Europe.”

Networking and accessories vendor Belkin has entered into an agreement to acquire Linksys, Cisco’s home networking business unit. The deal would include Linksys products, technology brand and employees. Linksys currently has operations in more than 100 countries around the world.

Huawei signs Digilife distribution deal in India
Hardware vendor Huawei has added Digilife as a distribution partner in India. Digilife Distribution and Marketing Services (DDMS) is part of Indian IT conglomerate HCL Infosystems. DDMD will carry Huawei’s entire product portfolio as the vendor takes the next step in pushing products and solutions to operators, enterprises and consumers and maximising its channel reach in India.

Emerging markets distributor Elko Group has joined the signature partner programme of Qlogic, a leading supplier of high performance network infrastructure solutions. Accessories vendor Logitech is pulling the plug on its remote control, digital video security, speaker dock and console gaming peripheral products after disappointing financial results for its fiscal third quarter ending December 31st 2012. Sales slumped 14% year-on-year to US$615m with after tax losses hitting US$194.9m.

CONTEXT reveals desktop PC figures
Channel tracking experts CONTEXT reckon that desktop PC sales sold through Western European distribution were down 15% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2012. The results, based on feedback from CONTEXT’s Western European distribution panel, showed most vendors experiencing a year-on-year decrease.
