Sharaf debuts DG Help

UAE retailer Sharaf DG has launched a technology services division called DG Help. The new service will allow consumers in the UAE to dial a toll free number for a free check-up of their PCs, laptops, wireless connections or home theatre systems, irrespective of whether the kit was purchased at Sharaf DG. Callers can arrange an appointment with a Tech Doctor who will schedule a visit to the customer to troubleshoot any problems. Read full story

Sybase signs up KASP in Kuwait

Enterprise and mobility solutions provider Sybase has struck a partnership with Kuwait Application Service Provider (KASP) – a Kuwait-based IT solutions outfit offering consultancy and business intelligence solutions. Under the terms of the deal, KASP will take on a major role promoting Sybase IQ solutions in the Kuwaiti market. Read full story

BlackBerry goes global with Brightpoint

Wireless device distribution behemoth Brightpoint has announced a global master distribution agreement with Research In Motion (RIM) – the maker of BlackBerry smartphones. The two companies are still slightly cagey on the precise terms of the agreement, stating that, ‘Brightpoint may distribute RIM products to various territories globally that may include North America, Latin America, Europe, Middle East and Asia, and Asia-Pacific’. Brightpoint bags exclusive HTC rights in UK

Wireless device distributor Brightpoint has been awarded sole distributor status from HTC for the UK and Ireland markets. The agreement follows on from Brightpoint’s recent purchase of Hugh Symons’ mobile distribution business in the UK. HTC and Brightpoint previously entered into a wide-reaching global master distributor agreement in October 2007. Read full story

Garmin grabs two more distributors

Satellite navigation solutions vendor Garmin has signed letters of intent to buy its consumer distribution partners in Austria and Portugal. Garmin has moved to acquire Puls Elektronik in Austria and Satsignal in Portugal. The move forms part of Garmin’s ongoing strategy of snapping up its channel partners across Europe. Read full story

Rocom picks up UK Ericsson deal

Distribution outfit Rocom, part of the AT Communications (ATC) Group, has secured a deal with Ericsson to act as UK master distributor for the vendor’s voice, data and mobility applications for small, medium and large enterprises. ATC reckons that the deal will deliver several million pounds of additional sales for the group with ATC’s Servassure division providing ongoing maintenance on the Ericsson kit sold. Read full story

Microsoft tackles South African pirates

Software giant Microsoft has cracked down on South African dealers selling counterfeit and illegal software. Microsoft has reached settlements worth tens of thousands of US dollars with 21 local computer dealers. The 21 dealers, based in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and Pretoria and a number of smaller regional locations, were found to be selling computers loaded with unlicensed Microsoft software. Mannai makes Microsoft LAR status

Microsoft has strengthened its channel-to-market in Qatar, naming Doha-based Mannai Corporation as a large account reseller (LAR). Achieving LAR status authorises Mannai to offer customers Microsoft ‘enterprise’ and ‘select’licesning agreements and technical support for all of the software giant’s products. Read full story
