Mobile phone retail and distribution giant i2 picked up a prize at the inaugural Middle East Retail Academy Awards. i2 was awarded the prize for specialist retailer of the year, picking up 35% of the votes cast during the live electronic voting process. More than 100 vendor executives voted live to pick the award winner from a shortlist of five nominees in the specialist retailer category.

Aerohive Networks has opened a European office and confirmed a number of distribution agreements across EMEA. Aerohive, which offers the wireless LAN access point HiveAP, has opened a UK office staffed by six sales and technical staff. Gareth Green, VP EMEA sales at Aerohive, will lead the regional team.

Isemann handed HP Middle East SPO role
HP Middle East has appointed Bernhard Isemann as the company’s new solutions partner organisation (SPO) manager for the region. Isemann replaces Salim Ziade as the Middle East channel boss at HP with immediate effect. Ziade has been names as SPO director for the Middle East, Mediterranean and Africa (MEMA) region.

Middle East systems integrator NTS has bagged an HP printer deal with the Government of Sharjah - one of the emirates of the UAE. Under the terms of the agreement, NTS will supply and install high-end HP printers and scanners for all government departments. The contract also covers a three-year maintenance and support agreement excluding consumables.

Samsung’s IT division plans to boost its presence in the Middle East, with a new dedicated office in Saudi Arabia set to open by June 2008. Further expansion is also planned for Egypt and Kuwait as Samsung’s IT unit looks to boost its channel engagement model. Madhav Narayan, general manager of the IT division at Samsung Gulf Electronics confirmed the plan at this week’s Digital Consumer Channel (DCC) MEA event.

Stonesoft has expanded Magirus’ distribution rights for StoneGate network security solutions, extending the VAD’s territorial coverage to include Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Magirus already held StoneGate rights for Italy and Belgium. Stonesoft recently unveiled its first comprehensive StoneGate security solution for virtual VMware environments and became a member of the VMware technology alliance programme.

Business software vendor Infor has promoted Jean Philippe Pommel to VP EMEA channels and alliances. In his new role, Pommel will assume revenue and management responsibility for Infor’s channel and alliances programme in EMEA. Pommel, previously global account manager at Infor, will report into Keith Deane, the vendor’s EMEA president.

GPS device vendor Mio Technology’s co-operation agreement with UAE-based International Marketing Services (IMS) is bringing the latest kit to the Middle East. Under the terms of the deal, IMS distributes Mio’s GPS and PDA products across the entire GCC region, including the vendor’s latest Moov range of portable GPS products.
