Western Digital strikes Jarir deal

by Stuart Wilson, Tuesday 16 September 2008

Hard drive giant Western Digital has struck a deal that will see Saudi Arabian retail giant Jarir Bookstore sell the vendor’s consumer line of portable storage devices in its stores. This new retail agreement forms part of WD’s overall strategy to strengthen its presence in the Kingdom.

“This strategic partnership with Jarir Bookstore demonstrates Western Digital’s commitment in KSA. We can now service the growing Saudi market with an established, reputable partner that will offer our customers not only the best products and technology but the best end-to-end customer experience,” said Khwaja Saifuddin, sales director for Western Digital Middle East and Africa.

“The IT market is currently the fastest growing industry in the Kingdom, and Western Digital is well positioned to offer consumers and businesses leading edge storage solutions that boast scalability, flexibility and reliability to meet their needs,” he added.

Jarir Bookstore has more than twenty outlets in the Kingdom and three showrooms in other Gulf countries. Jarir Bookstores’ sales climbed 15.7% year-on-year in 2007 to a massive US$464.7m.

Nasser Al-Ageel, chief operating officer at Jarir Bookstore, said: “Western Digital and Jarir Bookstore is a partnership between two leading brands that share a similar passion for creating and offering meaningful consumer products through design, innovation and value. With Western Digital’s line of consumer products, we hope to increase our market share in the fast growing storage sector.”

Western Digital’s Middle East operation has also been handed coverage of territories within the CIS this year. Speaking at an event in Moscow earlier this year, Saifuddin confirmed that these territories had been transferred to the control of the Middle East operation, claiming that the move made sense because of the propensity for product to flow into CIS channels through distributors in Dubai.
