Bell gives second quarter guidance

by Stuart Wilson, Tuesday 22 July 2008

Value-added distributor Bell Microproducts has announced global preliminary sales for the quarter ending June 2008 of between US$960m and US$970m – up some 3% from a year earlier. Sales climbed in Europe and Latin America and in Bell’s North American enterprise group. Currency shifts resulted in a positive impact of US$31m on Bell’s preliminary figures.

Bell’s European sales accounted for approximately 43% of total quarterly sales. The European solutions product division jumped 3% driven by a strong 27% year-on-year increase in sales of storage systems. Components and peripherals sales in Europe were up 5% while sales of computer platforms and software declined.

“We generated modest year-over-year revenue growth in the second quarter despite the economy and slower technology spending,’’ commented W. Donald Bell, president and CEO at Bell Microproducts. “We are particularly pleased with the growth of solutions products in this seasonally softer quarter and the challenging economic environment.

“Disk drive sales in North America and Europe were disappointing due to market conditions in both geographies, which led to lower volumes and resulting rebates. As a result of the mix shift to higher margin solutions sales, we anticipate reporting a slight improvement in gross margins in the second quarter compared to the same quarter last year. Although the economic environment is expected to remain challenging, our focus will continue to be on solid execution through the balance of 2008,’’ he added.

Bell has also stated that it is ‘unable at this time to provide additional quantitative information regarding its results for the second quarter of 2008 until the previously announced restatement of its financial statements for certain prior periods, and the related audits and reviews, have been completed.’
