Tech Data Uruguay will join hundreds of leading channel organisations at next month’s DISTREE Latin America, keen to meet with ICT and consumer electronics (CE) vendors looking to build new routes-to-market. Gabriel González, commercial manager at Tech Data Uruguay, will represent the distributor and meet with vendors hoping to open up new sales channels into the Uruguayan retail market.

González said: “In Uruguay the retail market is not yet as mature as in Argentina or Chile, so there is still room to grow and introduce new products.”

There are challenges within the Uruguay market with some manufacturers attempting to sell directly to retail chains and bypass distributors. “The Uruguayan market size is small and there is real competition that can undermine profitability,” explained González.

“Running a successful retail promotion in Uruguay is becoming more dependent on financial support being offered from the marketing funds of either the distributor or vendor,” he added.

Tech Data Uruguay serves a customer base of 1,200 active accounts and is committed to further developing its retail channel business in the year ahead. González believes that many vendors are looking to expand sales in new market in Latin America to compensate for any sales shortfall caused by import restrictions in Argentina.

González claims that vendors are also putting more emphasis on sales in Latin America because of demand issues in mature markets such as Europe. Although e-commerce sales remain in their infancy in Uruguay, González believes that an increased presence and portfolio in the retail channel will allow Tech Data Uruguay to achieve double digit percentage sales growth.
