UAE-based retailer Jacky’s Electronics has stated that tablets and smartphones remained the most in-demand products during this year’s Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) festival. Tablet sales were up 40% year-on-year while smartphone sales climbed 22%. Jacky’s did not reveal whether these increases were in unit terms or revenue values.

The launch of the Samsung Galaxy SIII was a major driver of smartphone sales while Apple remained the dominant vendor in the tablet category.

“Overall, this year’s DSS was a successful event for us as we have registered a modest growth of 9% in sales compared to last year. While DSS was shorter this year due to the onset of Ramadan, we have achieved our desired results,” said Ashish Panjabi, COO at Jacky’s Electronics.

Jacky’s saw solid growth from its outlets in both Mall of the Emirates (MoE) and Deira City Centre. The Dubai Mall store also continued to perform well despite car park refurbishment.

“The role of shopping malls and mall-based events has been critical in making DSS a success. DSS has always been more of a family event. Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment (DEPE) also did a fantastic job in terms of promoting a lot of these mall-based events through newspaper advertisements, radio campaigns or even using social media,” Panjabi added.
