Strong consumer electronics sales in Argentina

Research house GfK’s latest analysis of the ICT, telecoms and consumer electronics market in Argentina indicates that the total market value grew 7.3% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2012 to hit US$1.79 billion, driven by growth in multiple product segments including consumer electronics and telecoms, plus office kit and consumables. GfK is an official partner at regional channel event DISTREE Latin America, which takes place this September.
GfK’s research measures the size of what it terms the ‘technical consumer goods’ market, which includes the following product categories: consumer electronics; photo; major domestic appliances; small domestic appliances; IT; telecoms, office equipment and consumables.
The first quarter figures from GfK showed solid year-on-year growth in the consumer electronics space, with revenues up 15% at US$512.4m. Telecoms sales were up 18.9% year-on-year at US$346.9m while revenues from major domestic appliances climbed 21.7% to US$399.5m.
The market witnessed a single digit percentage decline in the IT market as import restrictions impacted sales through the Argentinian channel. The IT sector was worth US$358.4m in the first quarter of 2012, according to GfK.
