Copaco picks up McDOS

by Stuart Wilson, Friday 4 July 2008

Consolidation is reshaping the Dutch distribution channel, with Copaco announcing an agreement to take over retail-focused distributor McDOS. The deal, which is subject to approval by the Netherlands Competition Authority, strengthens Copaco’s position in the retail channel in the Benelux and France and also adds a number of new vendors to the distributor’s portfolio.

"The McDOS and Copaco grouping will provide our customers with even more advantages and ease than before. The large volume will contribute to a further improvement of our logistical efficiency. Our product portfolio will additionally be complemented with interesting brands while our market will be expanded,’’ said Jos Reijers, CEO at Copaco.

Frans Hendriks, founder and CEO at McDOS, commented: "We are delighted with this announcement. The merging of powers is strategic and geared to the future. McDOS and Copaco share a common vision and our products and services fully complement each other.”

“The operating procedures and market approach of McDOS and Copaco respectively are perfectly attuned to one another. There was a clear match from the very start. The cultures are comparable and the management has an entrepreneurial attitude. We are confident that, in cooperation with Copaco, we can further expand the policy introduced by McDOS over the coming years,” added Hendriks.

The two companies claim that the deal creates a complete entity, able to offer tailor-made solutions to the ICT, consumer electronics and mobile markets. McDOS is active in the Dutch and Belgian markets and has 90 employees.

Eindhoven-based Copaco has around 350 staff and operates predominantly in the Benelux and France. Copaco is a co-founder and shareholder in the European Wholesale Group (EWG), which has approximately 3,000 staff and annual sales in the region of €6 billion (US$9.42 billion).
