GfK highlights South America’s sales growth

The importance of South America in the worldwide consumer durables market continues to grow, according to research house GfK. By the end of 2011, South America will account for 12% of global sales of consumer electronics, telecommunications and IT products. This represents continued growth from a figure of 9% in 2009 and 10% in 2010. GfK is an official event partner for this week’s DISTREE Latin America – a regional channel development event for vendors, distributors and retailers.
IT products are one of the strongest performing segments in South America, with notebook sales growing rapidly. Among the countries covered by GfK in the region, the biggest increase in sales comes from Argentina with a growth of 76% for notebooks. This was followed by 61% in Peru, 44% in Chile and 26% in Brazil. Despite its lower growth rate, Brazil accounts for 80% of all sales in the region.
Netbook demand grew by 7% in Peru, 11% in Argentina and 30% in Chile. In Brazil, a country where these devices have never reached the same importance as the other Spanish speaking nations, sales declined by 7%, according to GfK.
Tablet sales are starting to make an impact in South America. In the first half of 2011, tablets accounted for 3% of all IT category sales in Chile, while in Argentina and Brazil tablet form factors contributed 2%. In Argentina and Brazil, where taxation for imported goods is particularly high, tablets are still among the most expensive in the world, according to GfK.
Tablets are expected to become more affordable in the future as the Brazilian Government is planning to lower taxes for specific devices. According to the Brazilian Government, five companies are already manufacturing tablets locally.
