Acer hits highest profit in 27 quarters

by Stuart Wilson, Thursday 16 November 2017

Tech vendor Acer has announced that its after-tax profits for the third quarter of 2017 hit their highest level in 27 quarters. Acer posted sales of NT$60.58 billion (US$2.01 billion) for the quarter – up 13% sequentially and 3.4% year-on-year. After tax profits hit NT$1.45 billion (US$48.2m) – up more than fivefold year-on-year. Acer claimed that the results demonstrated the company’s strong business momentum, stabilising operations and renewed profitability.

The third quarter sales growth is attributable in part to Acer’s gaming product revenue that more than doubled and contributed more than 10% of total sales. Windows-based commercial notebook revenue grew by 40% year-on-year; Chromebook revenue grew by 27%, while new business revenue, including Acer’s cloud and e-business grew by 30%.

Geographically, EMEA accounted for 38% of Acer’s sales in the third quarter, with APAC contributing 33% and 29% derived from pan-America. Acer’s after-tax profit margin hit 2.4% in the third quarter of 2017, compared to just 0.4% a year earlier.

Acer’s operating profits for the third quarter stood at NT$933m (US$31m). This was supplemented by non-operating income of NT$867m (US$28.8m) in the third quarter, which swelled overall pre-tax profits to NT$1.8 billion (US$59.9m).
