Research firm GfK has identified strong growth in the Asia Pacific (APAC) consumer technology market in the past year, driven by the growth and development of categories such as action cameras and wearables. GfK is a confirmed Event Partner for regional consumer tech channel event DISTREE APAC 2017, which takes place in Singapore on November 8-10th. GfK will deliver a keynote speech and a series of workshops focused on the latest APAC market trends.

In the last year, emerging markets in APAC have driven growth for action cameras, registering 57% and 33% increase in sales volume and value respectively, while the region’s developed markets saw volume up 9% and value up 40%. The number of action camera brands tracked by GfK rose sharply to 13 in 2016.

Gerard Tan, senior director for technology at GfK Asia, recently stated: “Nowadays, consumers are increasingly sharing videos, contributing to the rising popularity of action cameras. Besides one of its key draw factors of being able to connect seamlessly to today’s smartphones, action cameras also tend to appeal to active consumers who are seeking new and interesting ways to record their lifestyle activities to view or share in full HD quality.”

DISTREE APAC will include exhibitors from the full range of consumer tech categories – including action cameras. The event gives exhibitors the opportunity to pre-schedule one-on-one meetings with senior executives and buyers from APAC’s leading consumer tech distributors and a selection of the region’s most influential retailers and e-tailers.

GfK has also identified smartwatches and health and fitness trackers as another growth category within the APAC consumer tech market. Unit sales of these devices hit 3.3 million units in the last year, with the value of the market up 9%, according to GfK.

Total sales units in the last year reached 3.3 million across developed APAC markets as consumer spending on the product category grew 9% year on year.

Tan stated: “Heart rate sensor and GPS are generally the key features that appeal to consumers looking to purchase a wearable device, and this is reflected in the significant increase in devices that provide these features. The sales of wearables with heart rate sensors rose by 28% within a year, while devices with inbuilt GPS almost doubled during the same time period.”

With APAC’s vast consumer customer base showing more interest in smart technology and a digital lifestyle, the future is bright for the region’s consumer tech channel. With more brands looking to make their mark in APAC, coordinating effectively with distributors, retailers and e-tailers to reach consumers has become a vital part of any serious business development effort.

DISTREE APAC, taking place for the fifth year in a row in 2017, will once again give a wide range of consumer tech brands unrivalled access to the region’s leading channel partners in one place at one time. Hundreds of brands have successfully used the unique DISTREE format to manage, build or launch routes-to-market in specific regions around the world.
