Media Markt and Amazon among retail winners at ‘EMEA Channel Academy: 2016 Awards’

The ‘EMEA Channel Academy: 2016 Awards’ were held in conjunction with regional channel event DISTREE EMEA 2016. These included a series of nine awards for consumer technology retailers and e-tailers operating in Europe, plus one award for online marketplaces featuring consumer technology products. The winners were announced at a Gala Dinner at Salle des Etoiles in Monaco held on Friday February 26th.

Media Markt was the big winner on the night, picking up the Retailer of the Year Award in four separate regions: South East Europe, Southern Europe, DACH and Benelux. Online giant Amazon emerged triumphant in two categories as the company was crowned UK & Ireland Retailer of the Year and also picked up the European Online Marketplace of the Year Award. Mediaexpert, Eldorado, Euronics and Carrefour all won one award apiece.

Liam McSherry, Marketing Director at DISTREE Events, said: “We want to congratulate all of this year’s winning retailers, e-tailers and online marketplace on their achievement. The voting was extremely close in many categories, indicating just how competitive the European retail channel for consumer technology products is.”

The awards were voted for by executives from vendors and distributors who were instructed to vote only in regions where they operated, or had in-depth knowledge of the retail, e-tail and marketplace landscape. The full list of winners was as follows:

ELDORADO - RUSSIA & CIS: RETAILER OF THE YEAR

MEDIA MARKT - SOUTH EAST EUROPE: RETAILER OF THE YEAR

MEDIA MARKT - SOUTHERN EUROPE: RETAILER OF THE YEAR

EURONICS - NORTHERN EUROPE: RETAILER OF THE YEAR

MEDIA MARKT - DACH: RETAILER OF THE YEAR

CARREFOUR - FRANCE: RETAILER OF THE YEAR

MEDIA MARKT - BENELUX: RETAILER OF THE YEAR

AMAZON - UK & IRELAND: RETAILER OF THE YEAR

AMAZON – EUROPE: ONLINE MARKETPLACE OF THE YEAR

McSherry added: “Voters were instructed to assess retailers, e-tailers and marketplaces on the overall quality of their business performance during the last 12 months and their service levels. We asked them not to simply pick the biggest player in each region, but to select the companies that had impressed them most during the last year.”

Online voting for the ‘EMEA Channel Academy: 2016 Awards’ for retailers, e-tailers and online marketplaces opened on the 18th January 2016 and closed on February 17th 2016.
