‘Make In India’ gathers steam as Gionee makes its move

by Stuart Wilson, Monday 14 September 2015

China-based smartphone brands are heading to India as part of the country’s ‘Make In India’ programme designed to encourage local manufacturing of devices. Smartphone brand Gionee has announced a US$50m investment over the next three years to start producing mobile devices in India in association with manufacturers Foxconn and Dixon.

Foxconn will start manufacturing Gionee’s F Series and P Series phones in Andhra Pradesh, with Dixon Technologies producing feature phones and other smartphone models in Delhi. Production is scheduled to start in October with both partners capable of producing more than one million handsets per month each.

Arvind R Vohra, country CEO and managing director at Gionee India, said: “Make in India as an initiative gives an opportunity to not only take Gionee as a brand ahead [in the market] but also to be actively able to participate in the growth of India economy through various touch points. We are happy to have partnered with the best in business including Foxconn and Dixon and we are sure that this step will prove to be instrumental in the brands future.”

William Lu, president at Gionee, said: “The Indian market is a second home market to Gionee after China and the investment in Indian manufacturing is just another step in a line-up of much more to come for the Indian market and customers.”

Gionee will also increase its R&D investment in India to improve user experience, customising its Amigo user interface to make it much more appealing to Indian consumers.

Gionee joins a number of Chinese smartphone brands committing to manufacturing in India, with companies such as Lenovo, Meizu, Xiaomi, InFocus and Oneplus all announcing their plans to produce devices in-country. There is also a growing number of India-based brands such as Karbonn and Lava fighting hard for a slice of the smartphone pie.
