Acer outlines African channel priorities

by Stuart Wilson, Thursday 11 June 2015

Leading vendors outlined their priorities for African channels during a panel discussion at this week’s DISTREE Africa event in Nairobi. Rajesh Mohan, Country Sales and Distribution Manager for West, East and Central Africa (WECA) at Acer, said: “We have several priorities in Africa including reducing the weeks of consumer inventory that are held in the channel, which will help our partners. We also want to put some real focus on developing Acer’s commercial channels in Africa.”

Participating vendors were upbeat on the growth potential for African IT markets, but understood that their channel and consumer engagement strategy would both be instrumental in driving future business success.

“We see African customers showing a real appreciation and understanding of the value of products,” added Mohan. “When you see an increased appetite for value products, you know it is real growth. We think there is a brighter future ahead in Africa.”

“We want our African channel partners to really focus and specialise. We are 100% channel committed in the region and we don’t go direct,” he added.

Within Africa, there is considerable variation in terms of demand on a country-by-country based, driven in part by economic and political issues.

Mohan commented: “We did see a slump in West Africa due to oil prices and recent elections in Nigeria. But now we see that this market has settled down and has huge potential.”

In East Africa, national markets including Kenya, are beginning to achieve a critical mass that allows vendors to address them individually.

Mohan explained: “We are now seeing considerable volumes can be sold in major countries in East Africa. And this increased volume means there is less need to have a hub to serve the wider East Africa region when it comes to logistics.”
