Linksys tops 100 million routers globally

by Stuart Wilson, Thursday 23 April 2015

Networking brand Linksys has now sold more than 100 million wired and wireless routers globally since it started to sell the products back in 1999. Today, Linksys offers more than 60 different routers connecting hundreds of millions of people and devices to the internet. Belkin Linksys is a Platinum Sponsor at next month’s DISTREE Middle East event in Abu Dhabi, UAE. As a leading networking brand in the region, the Belkin Linksys team will use the event to hold pre-scheduled one-on-one meetings with senior retail and e-tail executives from across the region.

Amanulla Khan, director Middle East and Africa (MEA) at Belkin International, said: “This [Linksys] milestone comes as no surprise to us. Linksys has continuously evolved and innovated in the last 16 years to establish itself as a brand of choice in home and SME networking environments.”

“As the way the world connects today continues to evolve, we will be rolling out a global promotion called ‘Link Your World’ that will help educate people about the value and importance that a router and wireless access plays in our daily life at home, on the go or at work,” he added.

“Linksys also plans to roll out interactive programmers and contests on Linksys.com and across its social media pages, as well as with retailers and VARs,” Khan continued.

Researchers at IDC reckon that consumers will be using 9.8 billion devices capable of connecting to the internet by 2017. The router has evolved over the past 16 years from wired routers to the different wireless standards – Wireless-B, wireless-G, Wireless-N, and Wireless-AC with the latest technology enhancements with Triband and MU-MIMO technology, which Linksys plans to ship first in a few weeks.

Mike Chen, VP product management at Linksys, commented: “The 100 million milestone of any product is something to celebrate. For a router to hit this accomplishment in the same company as smartphones, game consoles, MP3 players, tablets and e-readers, shows how crucial sharing an internet connection has become. When Linksys introduced the first consumer grade router in 1999, we never would have imagined it would have such a critical role for connecting the Internet of Things (IoT) in the home.”

Linksys plans to maintain its position at the leading edge of advancing the router and its capabilities. The company claims that it will continue to push the envelope to bring faster, more seamless and ubiquitous Wi-Fi to homes and offices around the world.
