Indian tablet sales climb in second quarter

by Stuart Wilson, Thursday 4 September 2014

Research house IDC reckons that tablet shipments in India hit 860,000 in the second quarter of 2014, up 9% compared to the first quarter of the year. IDC claims that the latest results indicate ‘early signs of recovery’ for the product category after a tough six months.

Karan Thakkar, senior market analyst at IDC India, said: “This recovery was fuelled by multiple factors. Business sentiments have shown improvement post-elections and near term prospects are anticipated to remain better too. Further, traditional PC OEMs have started making big inroads in the tablet market and most of this success is led by leveraging their vast expanded reach through multiple distribution points.”

Android continues to be the preferred tablet operating system in India with 89.6% market share. Windows OS has some traction in the market, driven by a spurt in enterprise buying. Tablets with screen sizes of between 7” and 8” accounted for 88% of all tablets sold.

Samsung took top spot in the vendor rankings with 19% market share, according to IDC. Micromax put in a strong second quarter performance grab 14% market share and dislodged Apple from second spot. Apple came third in the vendor rankings with 9% market share. Almost two thirds of Apple’s unit volume was from iPad Mini sales.

Kiran Kumar, research manager client devices at IDC India, added: “Improved discretionary spends by end users and festive buying is expected to drive growth in the tablet market in the coming quarters. IDC anticipates this to be well supported by the optimism witnessed around enterprise IT spending in the recent past.”

IDC sounds a note of caution for A-brand vendors, pointing out that the Indian market remains highly price sensitive. Against this backdrop, relatively unknown brands with low price points can achieve significant success in the Indian market.
