Tablet sales rise sharply in Mexico

by Stuart Wilson, Monday 7 July 2014

Tablet sales in Mexico hit 1.1 million units in the first quarter of 2014, up 36% year-on-year, according to research firm IDC. The tablet size of choice was 7” and 8” models, which accounted for 69% of products sold in the first quarter. IDC attributed the popularity of these sizes to their affordability.

IDC Mexico’s Abraham Llández commented: “Tablets have made a large impact in terms of sales in Mexico. The tablet form factor continues to boom thanks to the mobility benefits it offers, plus retailer promotions and the low cost of devices.”

While tablet sales climbed in Mexico in the first quarter of 2014, the PC market contracted as a result. IDC Mexico reckons that PC sales for the first quarter hit 1.1 million units – a drop of 21% year-on-year. The PC market was split evenly between desktops and notebooks. IDC Mexico reckons that the country’s PC market has now reached a mature state.

Llández added: "The main reasons [for the PC market decline] were the reduction in the number of competitors, with the departure of two brands in the market and, of course, the growing trend of mobility growth through tablets and smartphones.”
