by Stuart Wilson, Thursday 13 March 2008

UAE electronics and IT retail powerhouse Plug-Ins ElectroniX has confirmed that it will open its largest store at The Dubai Mall, which will be one of the largest malls in the world. A recent Indian press report also claimed that Al-Futtaim, the parent company behind Plug-Ins, is in talks to purchase a stake in Jumbo Electronics.

The report, which appeared on The Economic Times of India’s website, stated: “UAE-based retail major Al-Futtaim Group is in talks with the Rs1,000 crore (US$247m) Jumbo group, the one-time owner of Indian spirit and beer major Shaw Wallace, for a stake in Jumbo’s flagship company, Jumbo Electronics, the sole distributor of Sony products in the UAE.”

Al-Futtaim already represents a number of major brands in the UAE including Panasonic, Sanyo and Toshiba as well as running retail operations including Panatech (for Panasonic products) and Plug-Ins.

The new Plug-Ins 38,900 square foot store will be located within the Electronics Precinct of The Dubai Mall and will be the retailer’s sixth UAE outlet. Plug-Ins, which is run by the Al-Futtaim group, offers more that 300 consumer electronics and IT brands within its stores.

Vishesh Bhatia, group director electronics, engineering and technologies at Al-Futtaim Group, said: “This is bold move for Plug-ins ElectroniX and one that reflects our firm commitment to increasing the brand’s market share in the UAE. We are confident that the store’s unique position in this landmark complex will establish new trends in electronics retailing in the region and provide customers with an unrivalled interactive shopping experience.”

“The new Plug-ins ElectroniX store will reflect the strength and expertise of the Plug-ins brand and quickly become established as a focal point for electronics enthusiasts in Dubai. The new store gives us the ability and scope to satisfy customers’ growing electronics needs and will set new standards in product offering and customer service,” Bhatia added.
