Smartphone sales jump at Jacky’s

by Stuart Wilson, Tuesday 21 April 2009

UAE retail outfit Jacky’s Electronics has seen strong demand for smartphones in the first quarter on 2009 with sales climbing 30%. Jacky’s did not reveal if the rise was year-on-year or sequential and did not disclose if the stated percentage rise referred to the number of units sold or the value of smartphone purchases.

According to Jacky’s, the growth in Smartphone purchases is due to consumer demand multimedia capabilities and the increased availability of cost-effective data packages offered by domestic telecom providers. Vendors operating in the smartphone segment include Blackberry, HTC, Nokia and i-mate.

“The UAE’s smartphone penetration rates have improved as a result of better and more affordable data packages offered by local telecom providers. Etisalat and du are offering various subscription plans that are cost-effective, convenient and include international roaming services to suit the needs of business executives wanting to access their e-mails anywhere in the world,” said Jimmy Patel, general manager at Jacky’s.

“We believe that the demand for smartphones will be sustained despite the current economic turmoil as niche consumers are willing to spend on new technologies that make their life simple and easy. This year, we will continue to see mobile manufacturers aggressively introducing a wide range of sleek products with good features and competitive prices. This is being further supplemented by developers, such as Intel, designing mobile net devices for better function,” Patel added.

“We are a very transient society, always on the move. Traditionally these ‘road warriors’ were forced to lug around heavy laptops, now they can do everything they need in the palm of their hand,” added Patel.

Jacky’s Electronics opened its first retail showroom in Deira, Dubai in 1988. Since then it has grown steadily and today has 13 outlets across the UAE.

The fifth annual Digital Consumer Channel (DCC) Middle East & Africa (MEA) event will take place from May 19th to 21st 2009. The region’s premier event for the consumer electronics (CE), communications and ICT retail channel continues to go from strength to strength, offering a compelling mix of one-on-one meetings, conference sessions, awards and networking opportunities for retailers, distributors and vendors.

Retailers will have the opportunity to review the latest products from the 50-plus vendors set to attend this year’s event. With retailers attending from 15-plus countries, attending DCC MEA offers vendors insight into markets across the region and the opportunity to accelerate or improve their go-to-market retail strategy.

The ‘Middle East Retail Academy: 2009 Awards’ Gala Dinner and live voting session will also take place at DCC MEA on 20th May 2009. The awards, which are held in conjunction with DCC MEA, recognise excellence in the region’s consumer electronics and IT retail channel. A total of 22 awards are up for grabs in 2009 with categories for vendors, retailers and distributors.
