Microsoft signs Red Dot for Ethiopia

by Stuart Wilson, Monday 2 February 2009

Microsoft has made some changes to its East African distribution line-up, adding Red Dot Distribution in Ethiopia, according to local press reports. Red Dot, which is headquartered in Tanzania, already distributes Microsoft products in Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Djibouti and Tanzania. Red Dot replaces Alta Computers as a Microsoft distributor in Ethiopia.

Speaking to the Addis Fortune newspaper, Michael Kaniu, Microsoft East and Southern Africa distribution manager, said: "Red Dot has been chosen to be the distributor because of the high-quality performance it has registered while working with us in Tanzania…Alta Computer is no longer our distributor.”

Red Dot is now encouraging the Ethiopian government to take measures against software piracy, which remains above 80% in East Africa. In addition to Microsoft, Red Dot also works with HP, APC and D-Link. Tanzania-based Red Dot has a logistics operation in Dubai and also has a sales presence in Kenya. The company intends to open up warehousing and sales facilities in Ethiopia in the coming months.

Red Dot is one of the five nominees for African Distributor of the Year at the ‘EMEA Channel Academy: 2009 Awards’ taking place in Monaco. These are the first vendor-neutral channel awards for the entire Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region and will take place on February 11th 2009.

The ‘EMEA Channel Academy: 2009 Awards’ are being held in conjunction with the DISTREE XXL channel conference. More than 1,000 senior executives from the EMEA distribution and vendor community are set to attend the awards, which will feature live electronic voting.
